My Approach
My counseling style is grounded in the person-centered approach, which is rooted in the assumption that people have the ability to move in a growth promoting,
adaptive and positive direction in their lives. In other words, people have the innate ability to self-actualize. However, this self-actualizing tendency
can be suppressed in certain environments (relationships) and it can be enhanced in others. I strive to create a therapeutic relationship that fosters my
clients’ self-actualizing tendency.
The client-therapist relationship that decades of research suggest is most beneficial in facilitating clients’ self-actualizing tendency is one that consists
of genuineness (being real and authentic with my clients), unconditional positive regard (complete acceptance of my clients), and
empathy (striving to truly understand my clients’ experiences from their frame of reference). These are the attitudes that are central
to my counseling approach.
My clients decide the focus of their counseling and the goals in which they would like to reach through their counseling experience. If you would like to read
more about the person-centered approach, please visit www.adpca.org or read anything by Carl Rogers, PhD and/or person-centered therapy
(i.e. person-centered approach or client-centered therapy).
I utilize a variety of counseling approaches to help my clients reach their goals, such as solution-focused counseling, EMDR and cognitive therapy.
